Fred G. Allinson

Fred G. Allinson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and lifelong champion of the volunteer fire service, passed away September 24th, 2026 in Kennewick, WA. He was born October 5th, 1935 in Seattle, WA

Fred dedicated 39 years of his life to volunteer firefighting and spent a lifetime serving others and strengthening the fire service. His firefighting career began in 1963 with King County Fire District 2, where he served for 30 years and rose to the rank of Battalion Chief. He later continued his career with North Highline Fire District, serving as Battalion Chief and Volunteer Coordinator until his retirement.

Fred's commitment to the fire service reached far beyond his local community. He served on the Washington State Fire Fighters' Association Board from 1973 to 1983 and was WSFFA President in 1980. For 17 years, he served as the Association's Conference Supervisor, helping bring volunteer firefighters together and representing their interests at the state level.

In 1987, Fred became a founding Board Director of the National Volunteer Fire Council. He later served as its Chairman from 1995 to 2001. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly on behalf of volunteer firefighters, helping secure more than $1.5 million for volunteer firefighter education, training, and protective equipment. He also testified before Congress on behalf of the volunteer fire service and served with numerous national fire-service organizations.

Fred's dedication and leadership were recognized throughout his career. In 1999, he was named Fire Chief Magazine's Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year. In 2001, the King County Council proclaimed Fred Allinson Day in recognition of his contributions. In 2009, he received the National Volunteer Fire Council Lifetime Achievement Award.

While Fred accomplished much in his professional and volunteer life, those who knew him will remember him for much more than his titles and awards. Above all, he was a devoted family man who cherished his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Rick.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Carolyn; his daughter, Tamlyn; his son, Scott; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Fred's legacy will live on in the firefighters he served, the organizations he helped strengthen, and the generations of firefighters who continue to answer the call. His life was defined by service, leadership, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be at Grace Lutheran Church, 24581 WA-243, Mattawa, WA 99349, on October 24th at 11:30am.

Fred will be deeply missed by his family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable life of service.
