Obituary

John Andrew Burgess, "Jack", aged 83, passed away on January 3, 2026, surrounded by his family.  He was born on September 1, 1942 in Ballston Spa New York to Mary Elizabeth Smith and John Chamberlain Burgess.  Jack grew up in the Rutland Vermont area.  He and his twin brother Jim and cousin Sharon were raised by his mother Mary and Aunt Margaret as his father died in World War 2. Both Jack, his brother Jim, and cousin Sharon attended Catholic schools throughout his childhood.  He and his brother were involved in sports and loved football and basketball.  Jack attended Castleton State College where he met the love of his life, Linda Hollis.  Jack and Linda had a lot of fun together and Jack was known to be the life of the party and quite fun to be around.  They were married and just celebrated 57 years of marriage in May 2025.

After college, Jack spent his career working for Stone and Webster Engineering company and worked at several nuclear power plant sites throughout the US which resulted in a lot of family moves. However, it allowed his family to see many different states and travel throughout the US.  Before retirement, Jack worked for Hanford in the tri-cities WA where he finished out his career.  After retiring, Jack had a hard time sitting at home, so he took up a small part time job at the Sports Page/Off Track Betting booth.  He managed the ticket machines and ran the cashier.  He was loved by everyone and was known to play or horse or two ;)

Jack loved his family deeply!  He was always up for a road trip and would often say to his wife Linda, "Hey Linnie, let's go take a trip to Oregon and see the kids."   He was always so generous and if anyone needed anything or any advice, grandpa was always there to help out!!!  Jack and Linda loved to go to coffee every morning and have their favorite strawberries with whipped cream for breakfast. Jack and Linda had fun wherever they went and enjoyed life and each other's company even doing simple things together.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Elizabeth Smith and John Chamberlain Burgess, his twin brother Jim Burgess, and his son Michael Burgess.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Burgess; his cousin Sharon Cassarino (Pete), sister-in-law Jean Burgess (Jim); and his two children Stephanie Gill (Gillen), Stephen Burgess (Kel).

He was the proud grandpa to five grandchildren: Meghan, Ryan, Kimmi, Carter and Maddie.  He also leaves behind numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Jack's family will deeply miss his warmth, kindness, and unwavering support. His love and dedication to his family were evident in everything he did, and his memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.

There will be a private family memorial service.
